Just a Memory

He glided to a con­trolled stop near the door­way to the con­ces­sion area by drag­ging the front wheels of his roller skates. The feat accom­plished with prac­ticed ease, he scanned the end bleach­ers to see if any­one might have arrived since he had last sur­veyed the scene about ten min­utes, or sev­eral rev­o­lu­tions of the roller rink, earlier.

Ferd spot­ted her sit­ting a few rows up, talk­ing to a cou­ple of girl­friends; punc­tu­at­ing each phrase with ani­mated hand motion. Her eyes caught his, and he felt a surge of emo­tion swell in him, caus­ing him to flush with embar­rass­ment. He broke the link between them, and cast about ner­vously, hop­ing no one had seen.
